Don't let Fear Define You

Do you let fear stop you from doing things?

Do you let fear stop you from being the person you would
like to be?

Then it’s time to stop fear defining who you are and what you do and start to grow and thrive

You can overcome your fear

Your fear is very real and it’s pretty good at keeping you out of danger, but it can also stop you moving forward and thriving.

Don’t underestimate the impact your thoughts have on you. You cannot let your thoughts define who you are and your future actions.

“Your thoughts are not your reality”  don’t let your  negative thoughts  undermine your self -worth.

In Mark Rhodes book ‘Think Your Way to Success’ He writes about the “I can’t” virus. When people say I can’t do something in most cases it means
that they won’t do it because of.  And what follows the because, is fear a phobia or some imagined consequence or a self- limiting belief.

The subconscious mind controls you and the good news is it cannot process negatives. So, by turning negative thoughts into positive thoughts you are more likely to take action over your fears

Henry Ford is quoted as saying “Whether you believe you can or can’t, you are usually right”

The key to overcoming your fear is to change negative thoughts into positives and reframe the negative language you hear in your head and in
the external world into a positive.

During Covid-19 we regularly hear the words fighting or fight.  These words can make us fearful or afraid.

I recently  participated in a Zoom talk with Julian Hitch (The Conscious Coach). He suggested we lose the language of war and put ourselves in the best possible situation to protect ourselves and win. Doing this puts us in a more  positive space,  able to make calmer and more rational actions.   We focus on the here and now, we are present and able to operate and make the decisions in the moment, without overthinking
into the past or future.

Most fears can be cured by just facing them head on.  In David J. Schwartz book The Magic of Thinking Big, he recalls during World War II the Navy made sure that new recruits knew how to swim or learned to swim.  One of the exercises required the new sailor to jump from a board six feet in the air into eight feet of water.  He remembers watching the fear in the young men which was very real.  Yet all that stood between them and the defeat of that fear, was one drop into the water below.  On more than one occasion he saw young men “accidently” pushed off the board.  The result: fear defeated.   Actions can cure fear, just by merely getting on and doing it, postponement, overthinking just feeds the fear and making it bigger and even more frightening.

How can you overcome your fear?

Mark Rhodes in his book Think Your Way to Success, suggests you writing down everything you believe might happen or could happen or you
have heard happen to someone else.

When you read your list back to yourself, I think you will be surprised how silly some of your reasons and fears are for not doing something.

The next step is to think about what you don’t want to do or think you can’t do.

Ask yourself what would happen if you could do it and what positives it would bring into your life?

Then ask yourself what the negatives of not following through

Remember:

Fear is natural, very real and its ok to feel afraid, but you need to find your way to move forward

Accept danger exists you cannot live your life in fear

Understand what you can and can’t control

Recognise you can’t control others but you can control you (other people’s actions can be used to your advantage)

Focus on what you can do now, in the moment

Act in the moment, don’t postpone what you can do now

Focus on you, build trust in you and what you are capable of

Challenge your negative thoughts and turn can’t into cans
